Why will the self-extracting archive (e.g. an executable ZIP) not work?
Softwrap™ has been designed to work with the original EXE. The reason the self-extracting archive cannot be wrapped is that it performs its own integrity checks, which are affected by Softwrap™. The original EXE should be wrapped and the wrapped file should be placed into a self-extracting archive.

Why will my Windows 16 Bit application not wrap?
Softwrap™ has been designed to work only with Win32 Bit applications.

I have wrapped 100 applications and need to wrap more, how do I do this?
The Softwrap™ system as default allows you to wrap 100 applications. Should you wish to wrap more software you must contact the 24/7 toll-free support centre to request more licenses. This is done at no extra charge.

How do I use Softwrap™ from behind a firewall?
Softwrap's system is designed to work through most firewalls. If you receive an error message when trying to Softwrap an application or when attempting to purchase a Softwrapped application, you may be required to open Ports 9001;9010;9020;9030;9040;9050;9060 on your firewall.

How should I wrap an application?
The most important rule for wrapping, is that the original Win32 Bit application is wrapped. After this has been done you can build install shields or insert the application into self-extracting archives. Ensure that you keep all the Softwrap files together in the same folder and not to include the .backup file which is unprotected.

What price should I charge for my software?

Price is one of the most important factors that needs to be decided upon when selling your software.
If you price your product too low, the end user may feel they are purchasing an inferior product, whilst if it is priced too high , he may consider another product – or even not purchasing at all. It is therefore essential to get the pricing right, to maximize your revenues.

Some helpful hints:
Do your homework:
Look at competitor’s prices and access your product’s features and usability compared to the competition.
If you are selling via retail (full boxed version) – you may want to offer a cheaper ESD price, but you should also be careful that this will not affect your retail sales, and cause conflict within your sales channel. You may also want to offer different prices in different markets, to take advantage of strong currencies, and wealthier end users. It is recommended to wrap your products in US$, GBP, and EUROS.

Price Points:
There are certain price points that can really help bring in that bit extra or help sell more units:

1. There is little price difference to an end user between being charged $11.99 or $14.99. They are both in the £10 to $14.99 category. The second option brings in an extra $3. When multiplied by 1000’s of sales it can make a big difference. For some products - it is however sometimes necessary to keep your product below the $10.00 mark, by charging $9.99 many consumers will buy without too much consideration.
2. Once you are charging $15 you need to consider if your product should be in the $15 to $19.99 category or in the $10 to $14.99 category. The extra cent from $14.99 to $15 makes a big psychological difference to the end user. Therefore if you feel that your product is ideally worth $15.99 try charging $14.99 because $14.99 is in the lower price band and will probably result in more sales.

Price Changes
If you don’t succeed at first try, try again. Moving the price around can yield dramatic results but don’t do it too often as it can upset existing customers especially if the price is reduced shortly after the end user made a purchase.

How do I wrap with a functionality enhancement upon purchase trial period?
This is quite a simple system to implement using the special Softwrap DLL file which can be downloaded here. For a detailed explanation on this, please refer to the Softwrap API reference PDF file which you will find within the zip file along with the API.

Why won't the Wrapper accept my price?
Prices must range from 10 to 200 (USD / GBP / EUROS). If you have different pricing requirements, please contact the Softwrap™ Helpdesk who will have a Business Development Manager assigned to you to discuss this pricing. If you already work with a Business Development Manager, feel free to contact them directly. This default pricing restriction is to assist our fraud prevention policy.

What is the optimal trial period?

This is completely dependant upon the type of software being Wrapped. You need to allow the end-user enough time to trial the software in order to make an informed purchasing decision, but also ensure that they will not fulfil all their needs without making the purchase first.

This is usually much easier to choose when Wrapping an application which gets used constantly, but often with games, users can finish them in one long play without closing it or can get tired of playing the game because they know they have a trial period limiting them and play to get as far as possible in this period. We suggest you make use of the limited functionality enhancement that can be used to only offer beginner levels or similar.

Which files should I distribute?
You should include the softwrap files created during the wrapping process: .exe; *.locked (the new protected exe) and *.sw (the Softwrap™ license file). You must also include any other files your software needs to run. Do not include your original EXE as this will allow the Softwrap system to be bypassed.

How do I keep my program icon?
You can do this by creating a small program that is used to launch the Softwrapped program. This program must then have the same icon as the program that is Softwrapped. All shortcuts should point to this "launcher" application and not to be the program file that has the locked icon.

How do I wrap a .DLL file?
Wrapping of a .DLL file is slightly more complicated as it is usually a file which can be easily copied from one pc to another. Please contact your Softwrap representative or support@softwrap.com and they will assist you in securing this file

How do I wrap a .NET application?
At present we are finalising development of a fully automated .NET wrapping system but in the meantime, if you require this format file to be wrapped, please contact your Softwrap representative.

How do I wrap a Flash or Macromedia executable?
In order to secure a Flash or Macromedia executable you will need to use the Softwrap Multimedia wrapper which can be found here.

How can I sell my software through retail outlets utilizing Softwrap ACTIVE!?

Most casual piracy takes place whereby a client purchases a title in a retail store and allows family or friends to install copies for themselves. Softwrap ACTIVE! hinders this by ensuring all software is activated online before use. In order to create a retail build, you need to wrap your title and request a list of activation codes from your Softwrap representative.

Each retail box should then include a unique activation code which the customer seamlessly inserts upon the initial use of the software. For a more detailed explanation on Softwrap ACTIVE!, click here.

How can I test the purchasing / unlocking of the Softwrap system with my title without processing my credit card?

Once you have wrapped your title, log into your Author Control Panel and create a 100% coupon for that version. You will then be able to use this coupon to simulate the purchasing experience. Please be careful not to give that coupon out to other users as they too will be able to use it.

You could create a limited use coupon that works a specific number of times. This can then be given to beta testers of your software to allow them to unlock the software rendering further uses of the coupon useless.

I am using a 3rd party e-commerce provider. How can I sell my Softwrapped title using their web-basket solution?

In order to create a build for distribution through, you need to wrap your title and request a list of activation codes from your Softwrap representative. You then add this title to your e-commerce provider’s shopping cart and pass them the activation codes to be sent with the confirmation email. Included in this confirmation email should also be the link to download the Softwrapped version.

The same version can be used for trial downloads which offers the ability for customers to further share the purchased title whereby the new users can experience the trial period and purchase for themselves.

I would like to sell both physical and digital versions of my software. How can Softwrap do this for me?

The multi-faceted Softwrap system makes this an extremely simple process to follow and administer. All that is required is for a single version to be wrapped and built. Request a list of activation codes from your Softwrap representative and place one code alongside each physically distributed copy. These copies can be sold through retail outlets, various physical distribution websites or ordered from your own site.

When selling the digital version, you simply allow the customer to purchase the title from any web-basket and place the download link to the title and an activation code within the confirmation email.

The major advantage to this is that all versions revert back to trial state when passed onto new users after being unlocked and also have a fully integrated e-commerce system in place to allow these new users to purchase their own license creating unlimited viral sales.

By having a single version used throughout all distribution methods, it is far easier to create and offer future upgrade versions seamlessly and less time is spent on preparing each release.

How can I offer my Softwrapped title for sale directly from my website without implementing a cumbersome web-basket?

Softwrap can supply you with a direct link to purchase you Softwrapped title from within your website. By sending your Softwrap representative the unique Softwarecode and download url to your title, they will prepare a url which can simply be linked to or embedded into your website.

Once a user completes a purchase through this page, they will receive a confirmation email which will contain the link to download the title which should then automatically and seamlessly unlock on their pc.

How do I offer volume discounts to my customers?

Volume discounts and pricing brackets are set up during the wrapping process or later within your Author Contron Panel.

This allows you to set up a percentage discount based on the number of units ordered at one time. These discounts can be changed at any time without the need to create a new build.

How do I offer a free CD to customers for backup purposes?

The first step is to simply upload the software to Softwrap for updating into the system. Email support@softwrap.comor contact your Softwrap representative for instructions on doing this. It is advised to create a menu system to place on the CD for ease of installation. Take advantage of the additional available space on the CDROM and include any other Softwrapped titles you have too which could lead to cross-selling.

The next step is to decide on who will pay the shipping costs.
Choice 1 – End-user pays shipping – Here they will decide if they wish to purchase the backup CD and add the shipping charge.
Choice 2 – Publisher pays shipping – Here you should either increase the selling price of your title to cover the shipping price or cost it into your original price. The benefit to your customers is that all of them will receive the backup CD when they make the purchase. This could be extremely beneficial if you place other Wrapped titles on the disc and market this on your website to increase the use of the CD and the cross-selling opportunities.

Please discuss these options with your Softwrap representative.

How do I change the price of my Wrapped title without re-wrapping?
You can update the price in real-time from within your Author Control Panel. This will immediately affect that wrapped version no matter where it has been distributed. Please note that if you chose to “Display Price Offline” during wrapping, the user will only view the updated price once they click to purchase the software.

How do I restrict / control sales within specific regions?
Regional sales restrictions are setup during wrap-time. After setting the price of your title, the Distribution tab will follow. This is broken into two sections which list various regions and countries. Those areas in the left section are all allowed to purchase the wrapped title. Those moved to the right-hand side section restrict purchases taking place from the listed areas. By default, all regions are included for purchase.

How do I sell the same title in multiple currencies?
Softwrap utilizes integrated multi-currency support technology. This means that by wrapping a single version, you are able to set all the pricing for each available currency. When a user then clicks to purchase the title, they will be offered a choice of purchasing in any of the selected currencies. You still retain full control to ensure that users from various regions are either forced to purchase with a specific currency or leave them the choice to select the one they wish to use.

How do I force users to purchase with a specific currency?
Softwrap’s integrated multi-currency support technology gives the publisher full control over the sale of their software.  Restrictions are set at wrap-time which allow you to set restrictions on currency selection. It could be set to auto-select the currency based on billing address or IP Address Lookup. Further flexibility can be given whereby it may display a default currency based on the prior settings yet still allow the user the choice of another currency.

How can I save time from re-inserting all the same information each time I wrap the same title?
At the final stage of wrapping a title you can select to “Save Wrap Details”. This will save all the details you have inserted during the wrapping of this title to a file. When next you are wrapping the same title, first select the executable file you wish to wrap and then select “Retrieve Previous Information”. Find the file you saved and open it. All the previous details will now be set up for this new wrapped version to save you time.

How do I Softwrap my title?

The first step is to run the Softwrap SDK and register an account. Once you have completed this you can immediately begin securing your software. Log into the SDK with your account details and choose the unprotected windows 32bit executable file for your application. Follow the Softwrap wizard to complete the wrapping process. Once you have received the wrapped files, create an install file which now contains these new wrapped files along with all other required files for your title.

How do I register with Softwrap?

Registering is an extremely quick and easy process. Simply launch the Softwrap SDK here, choose “Register” and complete the required details. Please keep your company’s address and banking details handy as this is required for Softwrap to setup any payments to be made. Note that payments can be made via Check or Bank Wire Transfer as well as by ACH Bank Transfer for USA clients.

How can I offer a physical CD for delivery to customers?

This is very simple to do. Simply contact your Business Development Manager and request this service for your titles. You will then be given a secure login to upload the software for placement on the CD. It is advised that you also include and HTML menu page which will automatically run upon CD insertion to make it easier for your customers to navigate and install your software.

Other titles can also be included on the same CD if there is available space increasing cross-selling opportunities. A navigation menu is especially powerful here where the user will be made very aware of the other available titles on the CD.

This service is offered at no additional charge to yourself.
